A top pick, let alone one that wasn’t earned through the humiliation of a 60-point season, was always going to send a jolt through a proud, frustrated fan base like the Islanders’. Still, no one knew just how lucky New York had really gotten until the puck dropped on the 2025-26 season. Most experts agreed that consensus top player Matthew Schaefer, the speedy defenseman Darche and Co. picked first at the 2025 NHL Draft, did not have the transformative, franchise-saving ceiling projected for recent top picks Macklin Celebrini and Connor Bedard. That thesis went out the window sometime in October.

NEW YORK — David Shuman has joined the New York Islanders ’ ownership group as a limited partner, subject to NHL approval.
Shuman’s venture capital firm, Lateralus Holdings, and the team announced his minority investment on Monday. The Islanders did not disclose financial terms or what percentage Shuman is getting other than to say there will be no changes to day-to-day business and hockey operations or front office leadership.
Scott Malkin and Jon Ledecky serve as governor and alternate governor, with Oliver Haarmann, Dewey Shay and John Collins also listed as co-owners.
“David is one of the most passionate Islanders fans I know and an extraordinary builder of companies," Ledecky said in a statement. “That mindset will be invaluable as we continue to invest in this organization and in this community.”
