The question for the Minnesota Wild coming into the 2025-26 season was whether they signed Kirill Kaprizov for a then record-shattering deal to contend or to save face. Kaprizov is a rare franchise winger with gaudy 82-game averages of 48 goals and 98 points, and losing him to unrestricted free agency would’ve been unacceptable. At the 2026 trade deadline, the elder Foligno was acquired by the Minnesota Wild and played 28 games alongside brother Marcus before re-upping on a one-year deal to keep him with the Wild for his 20th NHL season. Now, Foligno is using that experience to pitch star defenceman Quinn Hughes on putting off uniting with his brothers in favour of re-signing in the State of Hockey. The Minnesota Wild have re-signed veteran forward Nick Foligno to a one-year, $900,000 contract on Thursday.

The Flames have traded for defenceman Jake Middleton and three draft picks from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for forward Blake Coleman and defenceman Olli Maatta, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Heading to Calgary as part of the deal are a second-round pick in 2029, a third-rounder in 2027 and a fourth-rounder in 2028. Calgary is also retaining 50 per cent of Coleman's $4.9 million salary.
Middleton spent his last 4 1/2 years in Minnesota, recording two goals and 14 assists this past season. His best season was 2023-24, when he put up 25 points (seven goals, 18 assists).
The 30-year-old was a seventh-round pick in 2014, and spent his first few NHL seasons with the San Jose Sharks. In 29 career playoff games, Middleton has recorded no goals and six assists.

Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold is confident his new star defenceman, Quinn Hughes , will be sticking around.
"We had to give up a lot to get him in this past year. We are going to re-sign him," Leipold said in an appearance on Minnesota Public Radio on Wednesday.
The Wild acquired Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks in December in exchange for forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, defenceman Zeev Buium and a 2026 first-round pick.
Hughes, 26, has one year remaining on a six-year deal he originally signed with the Canucks that pays him $7.85 million annually.
