Joe Sakic is the Colorado Avalanche’s general manager, and there is no plan for that to change anytime soon.
Sakic is committed to the role in a full-time capacity and there has been no search for a replacement, team sources confirmed. There is no set timeline for how long Sakic will be the club’s GM, but he has been “reinvigorated” after the stunning loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, a source said.

The Colorado Avalanche were the toast of the NHL for most of last season after a historically hot start to the regular season culminated in a Presidents’ Trophy win by eight points over the next-closest team.
Nathan MacKinnon finished third in the voting for the Hart Trophy as the league’s MVP, while Cale Makar came in second place for the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman.
But in the playoffs, with MacKinnon and Makar battling through injuries in the Western Conference Final, a historic season came to an unceremonious, and even embarrassing, end with the Avs getting swept by the Vegas Golden Knights .
After Colorado’s top duo won the Cup in 2022 with help from now-departed co-star Mikko Rantanen, the Avs have failed to make it out of the West in any of the subsequent four postseasons.

The Colorado Avalanche signed the defenceman to a one-year contract extension on Friday.
The 41-year-old posted 35 points (12 goals and 23 assists) in 82 regular-season games for Colorado in 2025-26, then added four assists in 13 playoff games.
Over 1,579 career NHL games with the Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, San Jose Sharks and Minnesota Wild, Burns has accumulated 945 points (273 goals and 672 assists).

Kulak signed a five-year contract extension that will see the defenceman signed through the 2030-31 season, the Colorado Avalanche announced on Friday.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman , his new deal comes at a cap hit of $4.5 million per season.

As an Avs fan, I strongly dislike this. There truly is no player like him in the world when he is on his game (like 9 goals in his first 8 playoff games in 2025 before getting pulled back into the program). His combination of offensive skill, defensive ability, tenacity, reach, cannot be matched. This is a huge loss even if he hadn't been himself as of late. I am sure the reliability issues factored into the return. Hopefully these salary dumps mean Cale’s extension comes right on July 1 (when eligible). -NHLJeff
