The 2023 eighth overall pick has agreed to an eight-year, $84-million extension, the Capitals announced on Tuesday. The new deal carries an AAV of $10.5 million.
Leonard, 21, is coming off a strong first full NHL season, as he finished with 20 goals and 25 assists through 75 appearances. He ranked eighth on the Capitals in points and fifth in goals.

Hockey's greatest goal-scorer isn't in a rush to hang up his skates.
Speaking with reporters on Monday after signing a one-year deal that will keep him with the Washington Capitals , Alex Ovechkin did not rule out returning for the 2027-28 season.
"We will see," the 40-year-old said. "Right now, I'm focused on coming back to D.C. and (showing) that I'm still a good player, that I can still help the team to win."
Ovechkin will be 41 when he takes to the ice for his 22nd NHL season in September.

Apparently he will earn an additional $4.75 million bonus if he appears in 10 games next season. So they signed him for basically the cap space they had left, plus an easily achieved bonus to get him to an expected level without it counting against the cap until next year.

For the first time in his career, Boone Jenner will not be wearing a Columbus Blue Jackets jersey next season.
The Washington Capitals signed Jenner to a four-year, $23-million deal on Wednesday, the team announced .
Jenner, 32, was the Blue Jackets’ captain for the past five seasons and has spent his entire 13-year career in Columbus, becoming the franchise's all-time leader in games played.
Over 67 games last season, the Dorchester, Ont., native recorded 13 goals and 25 assists.

The Washington Capitals traded the centre to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick (originally from San Jose).
Lapierre, 24, recorded four goals and 12 assists in 74 games with the Capitals last season.
Drafted by Washington as the 22nd overall pick in 2020, Lapierre has appeared in 158 career NHL games with the organization, posting 13 goals and 34 assists.

The St. Louis Blues have traded the right winger to the Washington Capitals in exchange for forwards Connor McMichael and Milton Gastrin, as well as the 16th-overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Kyrou, 28, recorded 46 points (18 goals and 28 assists) in 72 games last season.
Across 488 career games, all with the Blues, the Toronto native has accumulated 378 points (168 goals and 210 assists).
