In Winnipeg, veteran defenceman Josh Morrissey spoke on Monday during the Jets golf tournament and was asked about longtime teammate Connor Hellebuyck 's trade request.

"It is what it is. It sucks when, first and foremost, a guy that I've played my whole career with and consider my friend, feels the need to make a move ... on that side of it, it sucks," he said. "He's such a good friend and we've been together for so long, but you know it's the nature of the business.

Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck (sort of) shocked the hockey world on Thursday when he released a statement officially confirming his trade request, and it was only a matter of time before the the team responded with their own words on the situation. It took less than two hours for that to happen, as Jets’ general manager and executive vice president Kevin Cheveldayoff released a statement on the matter in the early evening of Thursday. “Connor has been open with us about his desire for a change,” Cheveldayoff said in the statement. “He has been an important part of the Winnipeg Jets organization for many years and we have tremendous respect for what he has accomplished here. While we will continue to work through the situation in a thoughtful manner, there is no update at this time.” At this point …

Report: Jets captain Lowry says he expects Hellebuyck at training camp

Even in the dog days of summer, a key question looms over the Winnipeg Jets : will Connor Hellebuyck continue to take the team's crease?

Captain Adam Lowry is operating as though the answer to that question is yes.

“I expect him to come to camp. I expect him to prove he’s the best goalie in the world … Until something happens, he’s a Jet, he’s a good friend, and we’re excited to get him back," Lowry told The Athletic 's Murat Ates in an interview published Friday .

In late June, Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said that he is listening to trade offers for Hellebuyck as the team comes off a year in which it missed the playoffs, one season after winning the Presidents' Trophy.

Former Jets, Maple Leafs G Hutchinson retires at 36

Veteran goaltender Michael Hutchinson announced his retirement on Monday after 11 seasons in the NHL. He last appeared in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings during the 2023-24 season, only appearing in one game.

Drafted 77th overall by the Boston Bruins in 2008, Hutchinson has a career 57-62-18 record split between the Winnipeg Jets, Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Red Wings.

Jets sign Cole Perfetti to five-year, $30-million extension to avoid arbitration

The Winnipeg Jets have avoided arbitration with one of their top young players.

Cole Perfetti and the Jets have agreed on a five-year, $30-million extension worth $6 million in average annual value in order arbitration, the team announced on Wednesday.

His production took a step back in his fifth season, finishing with 12 goals and 20 assists in 68 games, after he put up a 50-point (18 goals, 32 assists) season in 2024-25.

Drafted 10th overall in 2020, the Whitby, Ont., native has 59 goals and 98 assists in 290 career games with the Jets since debuting in the 2021-22 season.

Jets sign first-rounder Viggo Bjorck to entry-level contract

The first-round pick signed a three-year, entry-level contract worth $1.075 million annually, the Jets announced on Monday.

The five-foot-nine centre helped Sweden win gold at the world junior championship last season (three goals, six assists in seven games) and also played for the country at the men’s world championship (one goal, five assists in eight games).

Bjorck also registered six goals and nine assists in 42 games for Djurgårdens in Sweden’s top men’s league.

The Jets have had a relatively quiet off-season, with key signings including defenceman Mario Ferraro (three years, $12 million) and goalie Stuart Skinner (two years, $7.5 million).

Jets trade David Gustafsson to Penguins for Jack St. Ivany

A long-time member of the Winnipeg Jets ' organization is moving on ahead of free agency.

The Jets traded forward David Gustafsson to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenceman Jack St. Ivany , the teams announced on Monday.

Gustafsson was a second-round pick of the Jets in the 2018 NHL Draft. He made his debut the following season, registering one goal across 22 games while making 13 appearances for AHL affiliate the Manitoba Moose, posting seven points.

Last season, he was limited to just 48 games with the Moose, in which he totalled a career-high 32 points.

Jets listening to offers for Connor Hellebuyck, says GM

Asked whether the star goalie has requested a trade on Friday, Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff did not offer a definitive answer — but did say he is fielding trade offers.

"At the end of the day, we both chose to sign a seven-year extension. There's risk on both sides," Cheveldayoff said. "As an organization, it's incumbent on you to listen, and that's what we've done to this point. ... What I've been hearing hasn't made me act. The best answer is I'm still listening."

Hellebuyck has five more seasons left on his deal, worth $8.5 million annually.

The 2025 Hart and Vezina Trophy winner is coming off a down season with the Jets, posting a 2.86 goals-against average and .895 save percentage, but he starred for Team USA in a golden effort at the Milano-Cortina Olympics.
