Sabres sign forward Noah Ostlund to eight-year extension

The two sides agreed to an eight-year extension, with an AAV of $6.6 million, the Sabres announced on Monday.
“He’s a coach’s dream, because those are the type of players you don’t really have to coach,” Buffalo head coach Lindy Ruff said in April. “He pretty well knows where he’s going almost every time. Very few times in the D zone does he get out of position.”

Sabres sign Zach Metsa to one-year contract extension

The Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Zach Metsa to a one-year contract extension worth $900,000, the club announced Friday afternoon. Metsa, 27, appeared in 43 games with the Sabres during the 2025-26 regular season, collecting two goals and six points, along with a plus-16 rating, while averaging 10:58 of ice time. The 5’9″ right-handed defender subsequently appeared in two playoff games with the club, collecting his first career postseason goal and playing 7:52 per night. An undrafted player, Metsa has spent his entire professional career to date in the Sabres organization. He signed his first NHL contract with the club in 2025 and will earn $850,000 in the NHL in 2026-27, the final year of his current two-way deal, before his new one-year, one-way extension takes effect in 2027-28. Hurricanes acquire Stiven Sardarian from Sabres for future considerations

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired forward Stiven Sardarian from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for future considerations, the team announced on Monday.
The 23-year-old winger recorded 44 points (12g, 32a) in 37 games with Michigan Technological University last season.
A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, Sardarian was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association 2026 Forward of the Year and to the first all-star team after leading the league in points and assists.
Sardarian was selected in the third round, 88th overall by the Sabres in the 2021 NHL Draft.

The Boston Bruins hired the ex-Buffalo Sabres general manager as a senior advisor to GM Don Sweeney, the team announced on Tuesday.
"As we continue to build our staff, these changes recognize the hard work and growth of people within our organization while also adding experienced voices to our group," Sweeney said in a statement sent out by the team.
Adams served as GM in Buffalo for five-and-a-half seasons before being fired in December, just before the Sabres' drought-busting run to the playoffs.
On the day Adams was dismissed, the Sabres were 14-14-4 and tied for last place in the Eastern Conference. After his departure, they went 36-9-5, winning the Atlantic Division and ending a 14-season playoff absence.
Sabres, Peyton Krebs agree to four-year, $18-million contract extension

The Buffalo Sabres forward settled his arbitration case with a four-year, $18-million contract extension, the team announced on Monday.
Krebs, the 25-year-old from Calgary, played all 82 games for the Sabres last season, posting career highs in goals (12), assists (27) and hits (201).
It marked the third straight year with at least 80 games for Krebs, who arrived in Buffalo in November 2021 as part of the return from the Vegas Golden Knights for captain Jack Eichel.
In 378 career games — 13 with Vegas, the rest in Buffalo — the six-foot centre has registered 42 goals and 91 assists.

Sabres to re-sign winger Beck Malenstyn to six-year, $17.5M deal

The winger has signed a six-year, $17.5-million deal worth $2.9167 million in average annual value to remain in Buffalo, the team announced Monday.
Malenstyn has spent the past two seasons with the Sabres. In 2025-26, he had seven goals and seven assists in 81 games played.
The 28-year-old also appeared in 13 playoff games and had three points (one goal, two assists).
Malenstyn was drafted by the Washington Capitals 145th overall in 2016. The Capitals traded him to Buffalo in the 2024 off-season for the second-round pick that ended up being Cole Hutson, brother of Montreal Canadiens star Lane Hutson.

The Stars want to keep Robertson, he wants to stay in Dallas, but they can’t agree on proper value. Robertson wants to play in Dallas for around $14 million per season, the Stars want him at closer to $12 or $12.5 million. … The Detroit Red Wings pulled off their Sebastian Cossa deal on Friday night, sending him to the Utah Mammoth for the No. 23 pick, which Detroit used to draft J.P. Hurlbert.
The Cossa saga is interesting, he always had the physical tools, but seemed to lack the mental makeup and demeanor that Detroit was looking for. The Red Wings essentially tried to tear him down and build him back up, and even after doing that they didn’t like the end product, especially compared to Trey Augustine.
Nothing new to report on the Dylan Larkin front, although it will be interesting today when Steve Yzerman addressed the media after Day 2 of the NHL Draft, which will be his first public comments since the trade reports surfaced two weeks ago.

The Sabres acquired defenceman Olen Zellweger from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for centre prospect Anton Wahlberg and the 45th-overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft on Friday .
Zellweger, a second-round pick (34th overall) of the Ducks in 2021, made his NHL debut in January 2024. The 22-year-old put up 22 points with 15 assists and added a goal and an assist in three playoff games last season.
Wahlberg was taken 39th overall in the 2023 draft by the Sabres. In 68 games with AHL Rochester last season, he had 29 assists and 38 points. The 20-year-old has yet to make his NHL debut.
With the acquisition of the 45th pick, the Ducks now own seven selections in the 2026 NHL Draft, including two second-rounders but no first-rounder.

The addition of Tuch would mark the second major move up front in as many days for the Capitals, who traded for St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou on Tuesday.
Sabres GM Jarmo Kekalainen indicated earlier Wednesday that Tuch would be moving on. The sign-and-trade represents the second major departure from Buffalo this week after the team sent defenceman Bowen Byram to the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday in a deal for the fourth-overall pick in Friday’s draft.
