Sabres’ Konsta Helenius to miss next two games with upper-body injury

The Buffalo Sabres announced Thursday that forward Konsta Helenius will miss at least the team’s next two games with an upper-body injury.

Helenius, 20, sustained the injury during Buffalo’s 2-0 win over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday evening. The Sabres still have two games remaining on their current road trip, but Helenius is heading back to Buffalo early to undergo further evaluation.

Just last season, the Sabres got off to a 7-9-4 start, good for last place in the Eastern Conference, before heating up seemingly overnight and finishing first in the Atlantic Division with 109 points.

From there, they defeated the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, marking Buffalo’s first postseason series victory in 19 years, before falling to the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference semifinal.

WASHINGTON -- A ghost from the Buffalo Sabres’ past came back to haunt them Saturday, but their demons of the present have been a recurring plague thus far this season.

Former teammate Alex Tuch scoring his second goal of the game at 3:42 of overtime capped a frustrating 4-3 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals and followed a familiar pattern for the Sabres (4-4-3) through their first 11 games. Playing from behind again after a sloppy second period turned a 2-1 lead into a 3-2 deficit, Buffalo tied it on Noah Ostlund ’s goal at 2:20 of the third period but couldn’t find a way to take the lead, despite having two power-play opportunities.

Sabres activate F Zucker off IR; veteran set to make season debut

The Buffalo Sabres will be getting a big boost to their lineup on Wednesday, as veteran forward Jason Zucker has been activated off IR and will make his season debut against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The 34-year-old Zucker is entering his 16th season in the NHL, and third with the Sabres. He played in 62 games a season ago and finished the campaign with 24 goals and 45 points. He contributed two goals and four points in 13 games in the postseason.

Any such move to land Hellebuyck would almost certainly involve current starting goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen going either to Winnipeg or a third team involved in the trade. Luukkonen, once heralded as the future franchise goalie of the Sabres, has developed into more of a solid 1A than a true franchise cornerstone.

Sabres’ Jack Quinn’s breakout has been a long time coming

There were many across the internet who questioned the Buffalo Sabres’ decision to draft Jack Quinn eighth overall in 2020.

For starters, his Ottawa 67’s teammate, Marco Rossi, looked like the more complete player, and he went ninth to the Minnesota Wild . Cole Perfetti felt like an excellent option there, and Anton Lundell was easily the top two-way forward still available. Sure, Quinn was a high-end goal scorer coming off a 52-goal season, but many questioned if he’d be able to thrive outside of a goal-scoring role.

NHL Status Report: Luukkonen expected to start for Sabres on Thursday

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is expected to start for the Sabres in their season opener against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; CBJNHL, CBJHN, MSG-B). The goalie had been dealing with a lower-body injury after tweaking something in a preseason game on Sept 26. ... Defenseman Olen Zellweger will not play Thursday; he has been in concussion protocol since Sept. 22. Coach Lindy Ruff did not rule him out for the game against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. ... Mattias Samuelsson practiced Wednesday and Ruff said "hopefully he's an option for us tomorrow." The defenseman was injured in a preseason game on Sept. 22 after blocking a shot and had been listed as week to week with a lower-body injury.

Sabres sign Matt Grzelcyk to one-year deal

On Friday, the Buffalo Sabres announced that the team has signed defenseman Matt Grzelcyk to a one-year contract. The deal will carry a league-minimum cap hit of $850,000 for the 2026-27 season.

Grzelcyk hasn’t participated in any training camp activity over the past week. He was an unrestricted free agent after his one-year, $1 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks expired this past summer, which he earned after being invited to the team’s cap on a professional tryout. His 2025-26 season ended prematurely, as he was put on the shelf after suffering an undisclosed injury in mid-March.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Sabres defenseman Mattias Samuelsson is listed as week to week with a lower-body injury, leaving him in jeopardy of missing the start of the season.

Coach Lindy Ruff provided the update on Wednesday, a day after the seventh-year player was hurt while blocking a shot in a preseason game against the Columbus Blue Jackets .
